It is rare that anyone would be absolutely horrendous in everything remotely related to sports. Not to get all rah-rah but everyone must be good at something. Some people may be fast learners, some may have more fast twitch muscles than most, while some may have cardio capacity that elicits envy all around. Despite not being athletically-gifted, last Friday I finally put a name to my very own natural gravitation.
An unintentional detour to a local mall took me to a part of town that I have not been in many years. I used to frequent those roads every day on my way to my junior high school. Thos familiar roads and buildings sure brought back memories and one of which was gym class. Back in those days, I loathed gym class. I sucked at every single activities: anything involving balls or racquets, track & field, gymnastics, heck even square dancing. Until one day, our gym teacher sent us off to run a loop in the neighbourhood streets. During that first week, I huffed and puffed like everyone else especially in the home stretch hill climb. By week two, I was among the first half of the class to finish. In the third week, I was top 5. Exercising at medium intensity for longer stretches of time was easy!
That little jog down memory lane quickly got me thinking. I remember in numerous occassions that I maintained good level of energy over long hours for multiple days on end. My travel companions often complain that I keep on walking non-stop from dawn til dusk for the entire vacation. I just do that without any prior "build up" for endurance. Suddenly the dots connect and now I know. Finally, something that I am naturally good at!
